Donald M. Berwick, MD, president and CEO of the Institute for Healthcare Improvement, will be nominated as administrator of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), according to various sources.

Berwick will be hugely influential in implementing the complex provisions of healthcare reform, many of which depend on definition and action by CMS. Berwick has engaged hospitals throughout the nation in implementing evidence-based interventions to improve patient safety and quality.
