Lisa Remington, President, Remington Health Strategy Group

The economic cost of Sepsis is staggering.

Sepsis impacts readmissions across the continuum.

  • The onset of 79.4% of Sepsis cases occurred outside of a hospital
  • The majority of Sepsis admissions had recent interactions with a health care system prior to that admission
  • 18% of Sepsis admissions were from a nursing home/skilled nursing facility4

According to 2013 data, Sepsis was the most expensive condition treated, accounting for $24 billion, or 6.2%, of the aggregate costs for all hospitalizations.

Below were the top 10 most expensive conditions treated in U.S. hospitals among all payers in 2013.

Sepsis ranks among the four most costly conditions in the hospital for all four payer groups.5

Proper care protocols are needed to keep residents and patients out of the hospital due to Sepsis. Strategies focused on prevention, diagnosis and treatment can help keep post-acute care facilities on track to minimize readmission risk. The following are clinical resources available from McKesson Medical-Surgical to help reduce hospital readmissions.
